100! And an apology.

We all fall off the wagon sometimes. After a year of walking the block I can safely tell you. Walking is NOT enough. I tried some exceptional stairs today with Helga and Eli. I embarassed myself. So maybe I'll get a bike or hike. If I can get drives, or increase my range I can get so many new birds.

Here's a handsome red-tailed hawk who circled away.

This felleh was spotted first, but IDed last due to complication, thus my personal ruling is:

Bird number 100 is the wonderful and VERY hard to get a good look at Wrentit. Yes. Wrentit. Giggle is you wish.

This makes the Pelagic Cormorant above 101!

Stay posted. I may be cutting my outings down to thrice a week and double the birds I need each day, and range. Gotta sort it out!

Filler: The unknown!

These have never been IDed and never can be due to not knowing a song, having the right shot, or because of blur.

Enjoy!

It's a sandpiper. Do you know how -many- there are of those? Let's guess together at the ID, shall we? This one I wanna call a Willet.

This is more than likely a Song Sparrow. It;s always a damned song sparrow.

This I am quite convinced was some kind of Nighthawk. It just looked weird.

These were very very white. I want to call them ( only the white ones) immature Glacous Gulls.

I have no idea. Go home! This show of inept birding is over!

Baby Steps

I've come a long way with spiders.

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

I do apologize for the lack of posting it's been really hot and I've been slightly under the weather. Not condusive to going out for walks. With this heat the birds all hide anyway.

White Pelican

A juvenile White-crowned Sparrow.

He was having a snack on the side of the road.

A Snowy Egret.

This seems to be the common shot I get of all Red-tailed Hawks.

This handsome fellow is a Northern Harrier. Same 'white' hawk that Becky pointed out to me in the car way back. He sat there a long time and didn't seem to care.

A juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron. Same bird I posted for all those weeks fishing at the stream.

A fish eagle. Also known as an Osprey.

A pair of Double-crested Cormorants.

So far some great shots... but no new birds. In fact I only got one new bird today.

What is this. Hmmmm.

Looks promising.

Ah ha! A Barn Owl!

I had read on a local birdwatching site about a place they dubbed 'Owl Canyon'. I've never seen an owl, so I decided to give it a go. As we were pulling up to the place the conversation was as follows.

"I dunno if this is the place C- Oh what's that?!"

"...that's an owl."

We saw four or five barn owls just circling around. This sweet little face brings my total bird count up to a grand total of 99 birds photographed and identified. What will be the grand number 100!? Stay tuned!

Where's my damned prize!?

It has been one month since I began. One month since I had coke. One month since I've had ANY soda. I wan't a prize, damnit!

As for results for anyone thinking of quitting pop entirely. Day two and three you'll feel pretty good. Somewhere before the end of the week you will have massive headaches and try to kill your spouse with your bare fists. You will lose this battle because you have weak girly arms.

Two weeks, you will sleep better but everywhere you go there will be coke. It will be on signs and in the mirror behind you when you brush your teeth. It will hide in the deep recesses of your mind while you sleep. You will cease wanting sex and instead fantasize about the cold burning bubbles of a freshly-cracked can in the morning.

Three weeks you'll begin to wonder what you will drink with the pizza you're ordering. You will order food less, realizing you only ever wanted the coke after all.

Four weeks, you will post about it and demand a prize.
When a birdwatcher sees a new bird they call it a 'Lifer'. I got a lifer today in the grocery store. Outside were these birds I was assuming were Brewer's Blackbirds. (Taken at 3 am)

Here's the cat from earlier.

Same spider from yesterday. His name is Joseph and he lives on my balcony.

Here it is. My lifer. This is a Brown-headed Cowbird. Once I got home to ID him I realized that the flock of 'Brewer's' up there are actually likely cowbirds also. I would have never made the ID if this juvenile hadn't flown overhead while I was debating breads.
